Crassna Peace Buckle

An old form, carried in wood that breathes.

The peace buckle is one of the oldest ornamental forms in Chinese culture, descended from the ritual jade disc: a perfect circle opened at its centre. The ring has no beginning and no end, and the opening lets everything pass through unobstructed. Worn for centuries as a quiet wish for safe passage, for a life that runs smooth, for coming home whole.

Most are cut from jade. This one is turned from Crassna agarwood.

The Material

Aquilaria crassna is the species that yields the warm, resinous, slightly sweet character agarwood is known for. Each disc is turned by hand from solid stock, then worked down through finer and finer abrasives until the surface takes on a soft sheen without lacquer or filler. Nothing is added to the wood — the colour you see is the resin itself, and the grain is left to read as it falls.

Because the piece is cut from natural wood, grain pattern, depth of tone and resin figuring differ from one to the next. No two discs are the same, and the one you receive will be its own.

Worn

The disc is strung on a hand-braided black cord with a matte black bead above it, finished with an inlaid auspicious-cloud motif. The cord is adjustable, so the pendant can sit high at the collarbone or drop long over a shirt or jacket.

Agarwood is light in the hand — far lighter than stone — so the piece can be worn all day without weight at the neck. Many customers wear it clipped to a bag strap instead, or keep it in the car.

Scent

Agarwood responds to warmth. Held in the palm, or worn against the skin, the disc gives off a faint resinous warmth — dry, woody, a little sweet at the edges. It is not a fragrance product and the scent is never strong; it is the quiet trace of the wood itself, and it deepens slowly with handling over the years.

Care

Keep it dry. Avoid perfume, lotion, soap and sanitiser on the surface — alcohol strips the resin and dulls the sheen. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. Do not soak, and do not leave it in direct sun or beside a heat source for long periods. Store it away from strong-smelling items, as agarwood will take on neighbouring odours.

The cord is a wearing part. With daily use it will soften and eventually need replacing; the disc itself does not.
